Intelligenter Sonnenschutz in der modernen Gebäudetechnik

The achievement and maintenance of comfort in buildings has had an impressive evolution since the 19th century with the creation of solutions like electrical lighting, heating systems and air conditioning. Because of this increase in sophistication of the building systems and the growth in scale of the use of electrical-power in an everyday base, the last 50 years have seen buildings grow their electrical loads to number never seen before. The building envelope is the space where most of the energy exchanges between the external and internal environments happen. Consequently, it becomes one of the main actors in the right usage and sizing of the equipment responsible for the artificial environment inside the building.

The ideal façade helps the interior of the building to receive more of the outside positive elements and, at the same time, reduces the influence of the ones that could be seen as negative by the building users.

The presentation focuses in presenting how a designing team can benefit better from the investment made on the façade and make it become a "return of investment booster".

Carlos André Rios Esteves, after Graduating from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, spent some time in South America working for Aflalo & Gasperini Architects where he developed mostly high-profile multi-family residential and commercial buildings like the "Rochavera Plaza" building in São Paulo.

With the "Hoye Buell International Architecture Award" for the design of a proposal for the Olympic Games in São Paulo, Carlos went to London where he graduated from the Columbia University's "Real-Estate Development Economy and Design" specialization course where he had the chance of interacting with architects like Bernard Tschumi and Norman Foster.
While in Europe, he also had the opportunity to participate in the winning London Bid for the 2012 Olympic Games and also work in Ateliers Jean Nouvel developing projects in different countries (like the Guggenheim Museum proposition for the city of Rio de Janeiro).

Joining Somfy's International Living Architecture Unit, he has been responsible for the interaction with international projects of renowned world-wide architecture and engineering firms, providing them consultancy for the design of façades and sun-protection systems for the well-being of the users, efficient façade and faster return of investment.
